What to Expect
of Dental Cleanings
Our cleanings may include several things, including:
- Removal of visible plaque and tartar from the teeth
- Elimination of plaque and tartar from under the gum
- Probing of dental sockets to assess dental disease
- Polishing to smooth enamel scratches that may attract bacteria
- Dental radiographs (x-rays) to evaluate problems below the gumline
- Application of fluoride or a dental sealer
- Removal or repair of fractured or infected teeth
- Dental charting so we can monitor the progression of dental disease over time
- Inspection of the lips, tongue, and entire mouth to look for wounds, growths, or other problems
How Are My Pet’s Teeth Cleaned?
Your pet’s cleaning will include a thorough oral examination, teeth cleaning, and polishing to remove any tartar and plaque. This all takes place while your dog is under general anesthesia. Once your pet is comfortably asleep, your vet will thoroughly examine the mouth, noting any abnormalities. First, the gums will be evaluated. Then, tooth scaling will be performed, using scalers to remove plaque and tartar above and below the gum line. After scaling, the teeth are polished to remove any scratches and decrease the rate of plaque build-up.
Will My Dog Need Tests Before a Teeth Cleaning?
Yes! Lab work before anesthesia is very important. Before your dog goes under anesthesia, we require certain tests. Blood work is the easiest and least invasive way to check for any health conditions to make sure that your pet is healthy enough for anesthesia and surgery.
Will My Pet Be Okay After a Teeth Cleaning?
Typically, pets recover very easily from a teeth cleaning procedure, and they almost always go home the same day. You may notice that they are a little sleepy from the anesthesia and the events of the day. Some pets may be a little sore from the removal of plaque and tartar or a tooth removal, but it shouldn’t be too severe. Depending on the condition of their mouths, antibiotics or pain medications may be prescribed. In these cases, we will provide you with instructions. Overall, your pet’s teeth cleaning will most likely be followed by an easy recovery, and they will have a cleaner, better-smelling, and healthier mouth.
