Unlike x-rays, ultrasound waves do not expose your pet to radiation. Ultrasounds also let our vets peer inside fluid-filled organs and assess masses and tumors.
What to Expect
from the Ultrasound Examination
Ultrasound examinations are non-invasive and completely painless. Typically, your pet’s fur will need to be shaved because the handheld probe used during the exam must be placed firmly against the skin. Anesthesia generally is not required unless biopsies are being taken during the procedure.
Ultrasound studies are performed in real-time, so the veterinarian will be able to see what’s going on with your pet immediately. However, the results need to be sent to a veterinary radiologist for further evaluation in some cases. Our team will let you know their findings and what to expect during your pet’s appointment. And, of course, we are always happy to address any questions or concerns you may have before, during, or after your pet’s ultrasound.
