Ultrasound

Ultrasound examinations are non-invasive and completely painless

At PetNest Animal Hospital, we pride ourselves on providing

the best technology veterinary medicine has to offer.

That is why we are thrilled to offer ultrasound examinations in our office. Available by appointment online, ultrasonography is a non-invasive diagnostic imaging technique that lets our veterinarians view your pet’s internal organs and structures by recording the echos of ultrasonic waves. Unlike x-rays, ultrasound waves do not expose your pet to radiation. Ultrasounds also let our vets peer inside fluid-filled organs and assess masses and tumors.

What to Expect
from the Ultrasound Examination

Ultrasound examinations are non-invasive and completely painless. Typically, your pet’s fur will need to be shaved because the handheld probe used during the exam must be placed firmly against the skin. Anesthesia generally is not required unless biopsies are being taken during the procedure.
Ultrasound studies are performed in real-time, so the veterinarian will be able to see what’s going on with your pet immediately. However, the results need to be sent to a veterinary radiologist for further evaluation in some cases. Our team will let you know their findings and what to expect during your pet’s appointment. And, of course, we are always happy to address any questions or concerns you may have before, during, or after your pet’s ultrasound.

Pet Ultrasound FAQs

Are pet ultrasounds safe?

Yes, ultrasounds are very safe. They do not use radiation and are non-invasive. Your pet will experience little to no discomfort during the procedure.

How is an ultrasound performed on my pet?

During an ultrasound, your pet will lie on an examination table, and a handheld probe (transducer) will be moved over the area of interest. The transducer emits sound waves, creating images of your pet’s internal structures on a screen.

Will my pet need sedation or anesthesia for an ultrasound?

Sedation or anesthesia is generally not required for an ultrasound. However, if your pet is anxious or in pain, mild sedation may be used to keep them calm and still during the procedure.

What conditions can be diagnosed with a pet ultrasound?

Ultrasounds can diagnose a variety of conditions, including heart disease, liver and kidney disease, tumors, cysts, bladder stones, fluid accumulation, and gastrointestinal issues.

How long will my pet’s ultrasound take?

The duration of an ultrasound can vary depending on the complexity of the examination, but it typically takes 20 to 40 minutes. Additional time may be needed for preparation and to review the results.

How quickly will I get the results from my pet’s ultrasound?

In many cases, the ultrasound results will be discussed with you immediately after the procedure. If a specialist’s interpretation is needed, the final results may take a bit longer to receive.
