Common Parasites

Dogs and cats can have both internal and external parasites.

The most common external parasites include fleas, ticks, ear mites, and skin mites. Heartworm, intestinal worms, and giardia are the most common internal parasites.

What Are the Symptoms of a Parasite Infestation?

Pets with parasites experience a wide range of symptoms depending on the type of parasite. The early signs generally include:

Lethargy
Pale gums
Decreased appetite
Excessive scratching of skin or ears
General signs of discomfort

Your pet may also experience skin irritation that results in a general odor and weeping of the skin, nausea, gas, diarrhea, and/or vomiting. In cases of internal parasites, you may notice evidence of worms or eggs in your pet’s feces.

Without treatment, parasitic infections can cause complications that range from chronic skin infections to death. Untreated intestinal parasites can also be transmitted to humans.
