Did you know that cancer affects approximately one in five cats and one in four dogs? Or that it is the primary disease-related cause of pet death in the United States? Cancer is a devastating disease that can cause a wide range of symptoms in pets, much like in humans. Since November is Pet Cancer Awareness Month, now is an excellent time to learn more about the most common symptoms. If your pet ever exhibits troublesome symptoms or you have any reason to think they could have cancer, PetNest Animal Hospital is here to help. Reach out to us right away to schedule an appointment.

Symptoms of Cancer in Pets

The symptoms of cancer vary and often mimic those of less-severe health problems. Because no symptom definitively points to cancer, it’s vital to seek prompt veterinary care whenever something is amiss with your furry friend.

Some of the most common symptoms of cancer in cats  and dogs include (but are not limited to):

  • Decreased appetite
  • Weight loss
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Lumps that grow or won’t go away
  • Unhealing sores
  • Foul odor from body or mouth
  • Blood in urine or from any bodily opening
  • Difficulty passing stool or urine
  • Problems chewing or swallowing
  • Lethargy or reluctance to exercise
  • Unexplained behavioral changes

Treatment options for cancer include surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. As your pet’s veterinarian, we will recommend the treatment protocol that will provide the most benefit for your furry friend. Finding out that your pet has cancer is frightening, but our team will do everything possible to care for your pet and put your mind at ease.
